Storm, last room, one fire, and two women not leaving
Rain shuts the mercedary district down in the space of a breath, and you end up under a tavern awning with the day's contracts turning to soup against your chest. Marie Dunareff is already there, dish on her hip, buying the last room before the innkeep finishes chalking the slate. Hua is on your other side, soaked through, refusing to move toward the dry wall. Upstairs there is one bed, one hearth, and barely floor enough for three pairs of boots. Marie feeds the fire until the room is indecently warm and tells you it's for the ledger. Hua says four words all evening and none of them are goodnight. Forty-one names want paying at dawn. Nobody is going anywhere.
